In this way, the volume becomes a fantastic comic book, and we haven’t even mentioned the jaw-dropping fight scenes yet.Įndgame starts with one of my favorite opening sequences from any Batman arc. 7: Endgame takes all of the themes from its predecessor and twists them, enhancing the story with literary parallelism while also developing new themes all on its own. 3: Death of the Family ( Review), Scott Snyder brings back the Joker and thrusts him in a climactic final battle against the Dark Knight. In what could almost be considered a direct sequel to Batman Vol. If you like Batman or the Joker, then this is the book for you. The entire story is a thrill ride that leads to a conclusion with twists and turns that no reader will expect, but everyone will remember. This creates a story steeped in complex themes and intense encounters. This comic takes the Joker’s last appearance and turns it on its head, turning a dark jester into a being focused only on revenge. Overall: The Joker is back in a bold new way. Everything in this collection looks beautiful.Ĭons: One of the Joker’s plotlines is somewhat bizarre. The message and meaning behind the work is well crafted and powerful. Pros: The entire storyline is great and maintains interest from beginning to end.

Two separate stories take place simultaneously in 3 distinct narrations. I never really knew anything about these famous fires which made it all the more interesting for me. The historical events were two notable fires that took place in New York City in 1911 - one at The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory (a tragic event that made way for the Unions to implement improved factory safety standards) and the other at Coney Island’s Dreamland Amusement Park (the rival business of the fictional museum of the novel’s title). Oh Alice Hoffman how I enjoy your stories!!! Thank you so much to Susan at Audiojukebox and Simon and Schuster Audio for sending us the EXCELLENT audio presentation of The Museum of Extraordinary Things.Īlice Hoffman’s latest novel The Museum of Extraordinary Things takes place in one of the most interesting times and settings - New York City at the turn of the century. This story is a perfect historical fiction complete with Hoffman’s trademark magical realism peppered throughout. A magnetizing narrator, Tookie seems tough and ornery, but she is actually quite “porous” emotionally and suffused with love for her tribal leader husband, Pollux, in spite of their complicated past. The story of Tookie’s body-snatching caper and subsequent horrifically long sentence is hilariously ludicrous and heartbreaking the tale of how reading saved her life in prison is deeply affirming. Tookie is supremely dedicated to her work, forever amazed, given her prison record, to have been hired by store owner Louise. The unhappy spirit is that of a former customer, Flora, who irritated the Native staff members, especially Tookie, with her dubious claims of an Indigenous heritage. The haunting occurs at Erdrich’s actual Minneapolis bookstore, Birchbark Books. The many-hued, finely patterned weave of Erdrich’s funny, evocative, painful, and redemptive ghost story includes strands of autobiography and even cameo appearances. The next day Grace and Jude's best friend, Daniel, disappeared without a trace. "Three years ago, Grace's brother Jude stumbled home covered in blood. "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it―her soul. Grace must discover the truth behind the boy's dark secret.and the cure that can save the ones she loves. The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, as her actions stir resentment in Jude and drive him to embrace the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Despite promising Jude she'll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel's shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry glint in his eyes. The memories her family has tried to bury resurface when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude's high school. Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared―the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in his own blood―but she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night held. The original title is Dark Angel the film was planned to be released under the same title in the United States (which had the latest release) but was renamed by Triumph Releasing to I Come in Peace because of two other movies entitled The Dark Angel (from 19), according to executive producer Mark Damon (in a 1993 interview with UK magazine Impact), who preferred the original title. The film is about a rule-breaking vice cop who becomes involved in the investigation of mysterious drug-related murders on the streets of Houston, Texas. The film was released in the United States on September 28, 1990. Baxley, and starring Dolph Lundgren, Brian Benben, Betsy Brantley and Matthias Hues. I Come in Peace (released under the alternative title Dark Angel) is a 1990 American science fiction action film directed by Craig R. The various tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic, with life lessons and practical jokes mixed in. The Decameron is structured as a frame story containing 100 tales told by a group of young women and young men sheltering in a villa outside Florence to escape the Black Death. It was originally written in the Florentine dialect of Italian and wasn’t translated into English until 1620, and even then it was only a partial translation. The Decameron is a collection of novellas written by Giovanni Boccaccio sometime between 13. Themes are playfully restated from one story to another within an elegant and refined framework. Boccaccio’s skill as a dramatist is masterfully displayed in this virtuoso performance of one hundred tales, vivid portraits of people from all stations in life, with plots which revel in a bewildering variety of human reactions. Summary: In a country villa outside the city, ten young noble men and women who have escaped the plague decide to tell each other stories. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”Īlice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: Her mother is stolen away-by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. Welcome to The Hazel Wood- a fiercely stunning contemporary fantasy audiobook. HIGH-DEMAND: the buzz for this debut is deafening." Booklist, Starred Reviewįrom rising star Melissa Albert comes a fantastical story of mythic proportions. "Highly literary, occasionally surreal, and grounded by Alice's clipped, matter-of-fact voice, it's a dark story that readers will have trouble leaving behind. "The particular target audience is the kind of first or maybe second year undergraduate or seminarian who's never really done much biblical study at any serious level before and just needs to be eased into it, because some people, of course, read the Bible from early age and they read it as a letter from God to themselves and that's fine. This book is the solution to that problem. The church needs his insights, and I've found that though most well-read Christians recognize the name, they have not imbibed his ideas. That's because, despite the fact that he is one of the most well-known and frequently-cited living scholars of the New Testament, he still needs to be better known. I've been looking forward to reading this book and engaging in this interview since I first heard that this book was in process. I have also lectured there, but please don't hold that against Dr. He's also a senior research fellow at Wycliffe Hall Oxford. I think whoever arranged that kind of knew what they were doing. Andrews, which sounds to me like a good job fit for him. Wright probably needs no introduction to you, but he is a professor of New Testament and early Christianity at the University of St. The book is The New Testament in Its World. When her parents arrange a betrothal to Laird Tadhg Matheson, she is horrified. No one knows the reason for her timidity and she would just as soon keep it that way. Plain in comparison to her siblings and extremely reserved, Mairead has been called "MacKenzie's Mouse" since she was a child. Her parents want a betrothal, but Mairead MacKenzie can't get married without revealing her secret, and no man will wed her once he knows. |
